I believe people are much more willing to hear the gospel than we are to tell them. Even though I believe this, so often I miss out on opportunities to share the good news with people. Perhaps you can relate.
A few weeks ago I had a chicken feed delivery. The delivery driver was new and had never been to our place. When he arrived, he called to ask where to unload the feed. I told him I would meet him at the barn, and before I left the house I grabbed a Million Dollar Tract and a Gospel of John.
I didn’t know how I would begin a spiritual conversation, but I was prepared. The opportunity came quickly when he made a comment about life. I don’t remember what he said, but whatever it was, it felt like a natural opening to offer him the Million Dollar Tract. On the back of the tract is the million dollar question, “Will you go to heaven when you die?”
He answered as many do by saying, yes, he thinks he will go to heaven. That opened the door for me to share the gospel.
The good news begins with the bad news. Before a person can understand God’s forgiveness, they must first understand they are a sinner in need of forgiveness. That’s why the Bible says, “The law was our tutor to bring us to Christ.” (Galatians 3:24) The law can’t save us, but it can reveal our sin.
I asked if he had ever lied, stolen, or taken God’s name in vain. He admitted that he had. I told him that one day he would stand before a holy God and give account. I asked if he would be innocent or guilty. He responded, “Innocent”. I explained that God’s standard is perfection and that there is no sin in heaven. He knew that Jesus died on the cross, but believed that Jesus’ sacrifice allowed everyone entrance into heaven.
All of a sudden, in the middle of our conversation, he stopped, looked at me and said, “You’re not going to believe this, as I was pulling into your driveway, I was asking myself if God even exists.
He went on to explain that moments earlier he had been talking with his father on the phone. His father was saying that he thought people shouldn’t talk about religion. He told his dad that he thought people should talk about what they belive. Just then, his father’s phone died ending the conversation.
It was at that moment he asked himself. “But, does God even exist?”
Then, less than five minutes later, he found himself standing in my farmyard having a conversation about, God, eternity and God’s plan of salvation.
He was visibly moved. He could hardly believe what had happened, and had tears in his eyes.
God is always working. He knows our questions, even before we ask them. I find that people are open to have spiritual conversations. They have questions and God’s Word gives us the answers. We have a message of hope.
Perhaps God has already been preparing someone you will meet this week.
You just might be the anwer to someone’s prayer.
