What was the cup Jesus wanted removed?

I recently completed a Bible study through the Gospel of Mark. Much of what we studied was a reminder of truths that I already knew. There was, however, one truth that came to me for the very first time. I found it quite impactful and want to share it with you.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed to the Father and said these words, “Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

What was “the cup” that Jesus wanted removed?

In the past, I assumed that the cup Jesus referred to was the suffering he would endure on the cross. As I studied, though, I realized that “the cup” was more than that, it was the wrath of God. Throughout the Bible, there are references to the cup of God’s wrath. (Jer. 25:15-17, Rev. 16:19)

Reflecting on this brought a new appreciation for all that Jesus did for me. To think that God’s anger at my sin came upon Jesus, and he suffered because of it. What a price Jesus paid for me.

Growing up, I remember singing the hymn, O Christ What Burdens Bowed Thy Head. Here are the first two stanzas of that hymn. Take special note of the second stanza.

O CHRIST, what burdens bowed Thy head!
Our load was laid on Thee;
Thou stoodest in the sinner’s stead —
To bear all ill for me.
A victim led, Thy blood was shed;
Now there’s no load for me.

Death and the curse were in our cup —
O Christ, ‘twas full for Thee!
But Thou hast drained the last dark drop,
‘Tis empty now for me.
That bitter cup — love drank it up;
Left but the love for me.

Consider the terrible price that Jesus paid for our redemption. The wrath of God over your sins and mine, fell on Jesus as he hung on the cross. When, by faith we believe and receive God’s gift of salvation, there isn’t one drop of wrath left for us.

As you remember the Lord’s death and resurrection this Easter season, rejoice with me that the price has been paid. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.

Hallelujah what a Saviour!
